Owner’s Tales: Acorn Cottage

The story of Acorn Cottage
Adored and visited frequently by many of our guests, Acorn Cottage has proudly been a part of the Cornish Holiday Cottages collection for numerous years, and has offered a home from home for those wanting to explore the Helford and Falmouth area of Cornwall. We spoke to owner Jackie to find out how she fell in love with the property and to ask her more about the local area.

Hello Jackie, thank you for taking the time to answer these questions, it’s wonderful to talk to you a little more about your beautiful family-friendly cottage close to Mylor creek. It’s clear that you have spent time to lovingly consider the decor in the cottage, what was your inspiration behind the interiors?

Acorn Cottage has always had such a calm atmosphere, and the big sash windows give plenty of light. Being so close to Mylor Creek, I wanted to reflect the personality of the house and its surroundings.

Could you tell us what the one thing that really made you fall in love with the house was?

The view out of the sitting room bay window over the garden. It was love at first sight in 2007 and is very much loved by family friends and guests.

What is your favourite way to spend time at Acorn Cottage?

In the warmer months, sitting in the garden eating breakfast, listening to the birds and enjoying the flowers. When the weather gets colder, we love coming back to the cottage after a blustery walk on a beach, lighting the wood burner and snuggling up with a bottle of wine and a good book!

What long-lasting memories do you have from your time spent at the property?

Going for a wonderful walk on the beach on Christmas Day, the many family BBQs with delicious food and lots of laughter in our pretty garden and coming back to Acorn after a day spent exploring in Cornwall, and relaxing on the decking, with a cup of tea and a delicious saffron bun.

What makes Acorn Cottage the perfect getaway?

The cottage is in a pretty village which has everything you need – a friendly pub serving tasty food, great local shops selling locally sourced produce and lovely walks from the door but is close to Falmouth for a huge choice of restaurants and beautiful beaches. It’s also perfectly situated for exploring further afield.

The location really is perfect for those seeking to discover the Falmouth area, what are your favourite places to eat and visit locally?

When dining out, we adore The Wheelhouse in Falmouth, Potager Garden near Constantine, Castaways in Mylor Harbour, IndiDog in Falmouth and The Star and Garter on the Old High Street in Falmouth. Our favourite places to visit in the local area that we know guests will love are Trelissick Gardens and walk, The Helford River, The Roseland Peninsula, The Seal Sanctuary in Gweek and The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

How would you best describe Falmouth to someone who’s yet to visit?

A buzzing harbour town that has plenty going on all year round. Fantastic restaurants, wonderful independent shops, and a choice of beautiful beaches. It even has its own castle!

And finally, how would you sum up a stay at Acorn Cottage in three words?

Comfortable, relaxing and stylish
