Above the quiet, wooded creekside of Port Navas, where the tide gently laps the shore and wildlife flitters along the water’s edge, a contemporary cottage sits unexpectedly among the trees, just waiting to be discovered.

Romantic in every sense of the word, or just as ideal for solo travellers wanting space to think, read, or write. The Studio was once the art studio of artist Tom Cross, and as you sit out in the morning to the soundtrack of rustling trees and the murmur of the wildlife, it’s easy to see why this particular spot on the Helford proved so enthralling and inspiring.

At The Boat House, any preconceived idea of a holiday cottage can be turned on its head. High glass windows cut through traditional stonework and allow the shifting light and movement of nature to be at one with the interior, creating a modern retreat fully immersed in the idyllic landscape. The open-plan vaulted roof holds a mezzanine bedroom, and you get a sense of wonder as you climb the staircase and jump into bed – it’s almost as if you’re in your own luxury treehouse or cabin.

Snuggle down beside the roaring woodburner after an afternoon striding the coast path over crunching leaves, or sit out on a summer’s evening with a bottle of wine. From its location on the creek you can easily venture further to the waters of the Helford River for wild swimming, standup paddleboarding, or sailing. Once you fall under the spell of the Helford River, you might just find it hard to leave.

March 2022 –  Please note that The Studio has recently undergone a transformative renovation that has breathed new life into this historic building, through its fresh indoor and outdoor decor.

Location and Surrounding Area

From the creek at Port Navas that gently fills with the flow of the tide, to the wider Helford River just around the corner that opens up spectacularly into Falmouth Bay, this part of Cornwall is a place to come and find your own pace among nature.

With woods carpeted in bluebells in springtime and fallen leaves in shades of ochre and umber in autumn, the ancient woodlands that line the Helford River offer beauty all year round. Miles of footpaths weaving through the landscape make it easy to explore, and arrive eventually at the South West Coast Path, where trees give way to gorse lined paths and sweeping views out to sea.

Change your pace from the calm of Port Navas to the bustling harbourside town of Falmouth, where sailing boats tack across the harbour and ferries criss-cross the waterside, taking visitors across the reaches of the River Fal. In Falmouth, festivities are abundant. This vibrant University town has a thriving arts scene and a rich cultural calendar, with leading events like the International Sea Shanty Festival and the Fal Oyster Festival.

The very thought of what lies ahead is enough to see you spring out of bed and into action, ready to seize the day – and adventure can be found with ease in this part of Cornwall. Thrill-seekers will love WeSUP in Falmouth, where paddleboarding in the bay offers a great way to explore the waters. Hire boats at Helford Passage, or head to the dramatic North Coast for a day of surfing or hiking – or simply to relax on white sandy beaches.

Just up the lane is the village of Constantine, where the largest supplier or spirits in the South West sits unassumingly in the village, ready with the perfect wine for your meal, or a rare whisky for afterwards. All the essentials can be found here too, like local milk and eggs.

Potager is a must-visit. Its organic café serves locally-grown food, and the picture-perfect setting within its wisteria-covered greenhouse is simply magical. Or step over to the other side of Port Navas Creek and visit the yacht club for an unforgettable intimate dinner. You’ll need to book ahead, though, as there are only two tables.
